Thomas was the eldest
child of Mr and Mrs William Towler of
Whins Avenue
, Sabden. He attended the
Sabden
County
School
, St Nicholas's Church and Sunday School.
At the age of sixteen Thomas enlisted in the army and was to
spend seventeen years serving his country throughout the South African
and Indian Campaigns.
Upon the outbreak of
the Great War, Thomas was stationed at Fullwood Barracks,
Preston
. It was at Preston where he had married his wife and together with
their two children they lived at
5 Jeffrey Street
.
In 1915 Thomas was
drafted to
Belgium
where he served until early 1917 when he was severely gassed.
He was to spend 12 months in a military hospital in the South of
England in a bid to recover from the effects of the gas.
Thomas was medically
discharged from the army and returned to his
Preston
home. He continued to suffer
severely from the effects of being gassed and it was due to this that he
passed away on
April 31st 1919
aged 34.

Lancashire
.
In Sabden he has been
remembered on both the School and Church Plaques.
