At
the outbreak of the war, George was a police constable serving at Batley,
Yorkshire where he lived with his wife.
Born in Sabden , George had lived with his parents, William and
Honour Thompson, at 39 Whalley Road, Sabden until he married and moved to
his wife’s home town of Batley. George
had been a regular attender at St Nicholas Sunday School and was a popular
member of the Church Lads’ Brigade. Rejoining
the Coldstream Guards, previously having been a member from leaving school
to joining the Police Force, he was sent to France.
It was during the German advance through the Aisne Region that
George was killed in action. George
is buried in the Montreuil-aux-Lions British Cemetery, Aisne, France. In
Sabden he has been remembered on both the School and Church Plaques. |
