Edward was born on
Clitheroe Road, Sabden. His
parents, Robert and Elizabeth, owned the village grocers store,
previously having been in charge of Sabden Post Office for a
considerable time. When
Edward left Sabden County School he worked for his parents in their
grocery shop. The family
was closely connected with the Sabden Baptist Chapel.
After Edward’s father died his mother moved to 15 Newton
Street, Clitheroe and Edward began employment for the large and well
known grocers, Seymour Mead and Company, Newton-Le-Heath. On
the 29th February 1916, Edward enlisted in the army and after
training left for Solonika in August 1916.
In October he contracted dysentery and was invalided to Malta.
He remained in hospital until March 1917 when he rejoined his
regiment in the Balkans. Five
weeks later Edward was killed in action. Edward
Sutcliffe is buried at the Karasouli Military Cemetery, Greece. In
Sabden he has been remembered on both the School and Church Plaques. |
