Arthur was born at his parents' home in Padiham Road, Sabden. He attended the Catholic School and Church. After leaving school Arthur began employment at Messrs Steiner and Company Printworks, Sabden. Arthur was a member of
the Sabden Band, and he went on to play for Whalley and Great Harwood
Bands. In 1911 Arthur married
and set up home at 21 Mercer Street, Great Harwood and moved jobs to work
at Oakenshaw Printworks, Clayton-le-Moors, Lancashire. Shortly after the birth
of his first child, Arthur was called up into the army, and because of his
reputation as an excellent cornet player, became a bandsman in the East
Yorkshire Regiment. Whilst serving in Bermuda Arthur contracted pneumonia and passed away in a military hospital. Mr Lofthouse was buried
at the British Army Hospital Cemetery, Bermuda. In Sabden he has not been remembered on either of the School or Church Plaques. |
