Joseph was born in Sabden and along with his two brothers he attended the village school.  Whilst in his late teens, Joseph left his parents home in Pendle Street East and moved to Grindleton, Lancashire to work in a mill.  In 1911 he emigrated to Australia and upon the outbreak of the war enlisted into the Australian Expeditionary Force and after an initial training period his regiment embarked for Europe.  After serving in France for eighteen months, Joseph was killed in action.

Joseph has no known grave and is remembered on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Somme, France.

In Sabden he has not been remembered on either the School or Church Plaques.
