James lived with his wife and one child at Greenwood Rocks Farm, Sabden. He was the youngest son of Mr & Mrs Jonas Ingham of Lane Ends, Sabden. James had been a regular attender of the St Nicholas Church and Sunday School where his father was Church Warden. On leaving school James was employed as a weaver at Messrs J Stuttard & Sons, Sabden. At
the outbreak of the war, James enlisted with his friend Alfred Valentine
and they were both, after training, sent to Gallipoli. On the 4th June 1915 during an attack on the
Turks, Alfred was killed and James seriously wounded, from which he died
six days later. James’s
grave was destroyed and lost in further fighting. James
Ingham is remembered on the Helles Memorial, Turkey. In Sabden he has been remembered on both the School and Church Plaques. |
