Walter, the son of
Harley Edward and Cissie Harold, was a native of
Dublin
. At the outbreak of the
war, along with two of his brothers, he came from
Ireland
to
England
to enlist in the army. It
was while Walter was training with the Pioneer Corps around Sabden that
he met and married his wife, Agnes.
The couple set up home in
Pendle Street East
, Sabden where they later had a son.
In April 1945, Agnes received official notification that Walter had died
from multiple injuries as the result of an accident while on active
service in
Western Europe
. It was later learnt that
Walter, who was stationed in the recently liberated
Brussels
, was part of a five man team repairing railway lines when they were
struck by a train, killing two and severely injuring three.
Walter was one of the two that were killed.
